Technology

We have been lucky enough to have technology twice this week. The year 7's are doing art and cooking. They have been using clay to make things with a botanical theme in art and in cooking have been making smoothies and fruit kebabs.
The boys were having fun with the scrum machine at lunch time:

What we learnt about being a tem member and leadership on camp

Team member
  • Trust your friends
  • Not everyone feels the same courage on some things
  • key
  • fun working with other people
  • encouraging and supportive
  • doing your part
  • encourage each other
  • help others
  • Talking and helping
  • Look out for my team even if they are not struggling
  • Trust
  • My classmates are fun and good people
  • working as a team helps you to succeed
  • don’t push people too much if they don’t want to do something
  • someone will always be there to back you up
  • 2 is better than 1
  • If you stick together you can do well
  • You are as fast as your slowest member and we are all in together (3)
  • You have to be patient because not everything is likely to go to plan
  • Focus
  • Work together and use everyone’s ideas and communicate so that it will work
  • You have to co-operate with everyone and listen to each other

Leadership
  • It's your responsibility to trust your team
  • you need to understand your team members
  • harder to lead than I thought
  • patient with everyone
  • being confident
  • help and lead each other
  • every team needs a leader
  • Have to be responsible
  • Respectful and kind to others
  • encouraging people and being a good team member
  • leaders are leaders for a reason
  • you have to go at the slowest person's speed
  • Give helpful advice
  • always support others
  • Give it a go and to not say it’s going to be horrible before you even try an activity
  • Patience/resilience, listening to each other
  • I need to be resilient and listen to everyone's ideas
  • You need to know you won’t always get it right

Camp

We had a fantastic time last week on camp. We did a wide range of activities; making shelters, bush walk, swimming, kayaking, sailing, archery and mountain biking to name a few. We got closer as a class and learnt a lot about ourselves and our classmates. These are some photos of us in action:

Term 3

Hi everyone welcome to term 3, I hope everyone has had a great holiday and is ready to go for term 3.
  • This term is another action filled term. Technology starts in week 7, cross country is in week 4, we do the DARE programme this term too.
  • P.E days are Monday and Wednesday and sometimes Friday's too but I will let you know in the weekly email the days in case it changes. We will also be doing cross country training most days starting week 2, so the children will need their P.E gear or sports shoes with them everyday.
  • Maths - our focus is fractions, decimals, percentages, proportions and ratios and problem solving. On the teaching and learning site is the progression for this unit so you can see what your child needs to know. Would be great to see children using mathletics more at home. If children don't have mathletics we will be logging them into e-ako which they can use at home too.
  • Reading/Writing/Inquiry - This term we are focussing on careers and this will be our main reading and writing throughout the term. We will also be having a careers expo in week 10 for the children to share their learning.
  • Camp - There will be a note going out this week about fundraising. Then another note with all of the details in the next couple of weeks once all the costs have been finalised.
  • https://sites.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/teaching-and-learning-at-st-joseph-s/years-6-8/yr-6-8-weekly-goals Please make sure you are looking at the week goals and talking to your child about their learning.

Camp Fundraising

As a camp fundraiser one of the parents in our class has kindly donated 25 manicures (Shellac Fingers) at Unique Skin and Beauty. These are normally $50 but for the fundraiser are being sold at $40. All of this money will come directly off your child's camp fees. There is a maximum of 2 per child (to make it fair), you need to bring the money to school and in return you will be given a voucher that you can redeem at any time for your manicure. They will be allocated on a first in first served basis. So get thinking of Mums, Aunties, Grandmothers and anyone else who you could buy one for or might be interested in purchasing a discounted manicure.

Novel Study Week 5 - Theme

Hi everyone. The discussion this week centres around themes in what we're reading. We're just starting to explore what a theme is and how we can use our skills as great readers to figure out what the author's message is and the theme they are writing about.

Here are our first thoughts - our initial thinking - so join in the discussion and tell us about the themes in the books you're reading.

Novel Studies Week 4

Think about the book you are reading at the moment.  What would you change in it?   This is the same process when you are writing.   What would you change in your writing to add more impact - to grab the reader's attention and create that vivid image in their heads?

If you wouldn't change a thing in the book you're reading, then write about why you wouldn't.  What makes that book work so well for you?  What has the author done to achieve this?

Drama

These are some photos from the drama rotation in week 9.

Activities for the holidays

If you want to do some work over the holidays, these are some ideas:

 - Make sure you have finished your plan for your inquiry trip so you are ready to do your essay in the first week back

- Look at others blogs and comment on their learning

- Have a look at the teaching and learning site - look at the progressions and see where you need to be as a year 7: https://sites.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/teaching-and-learning-at-st-joseph-s/website-builder/learning-progressions

Writing - do some writing on your documents and then in the right hand corner click the blue share button and type in mtangney@stjoseph.school.nz and then I will be able to give you some feedback. Use this document to help you get some ideas for your writing:  https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/document/d/

These are some good websites to practice your comprehension and help your deeper thinking:
http://wonderopolis.org/ - when you choose a wonder it has a vocab activity and some comprehension activities on the right hand side.
http://ed.ted.com/  - when you choose a video on the right hand side it has 'think' at the side which is a range of questions about the video.
http://reading.ecb.org/index.html - create a login and then you can practice your comprehension strategies.
http://www.exquisite-minds.com/best-thinking-games-online/ - good thinking activitieshttp://stjosephsyear7.blogspot.co.nz/p/reading.html - webquests you could follow one of these and present your findings if you wanted too.

Maths - http://www.mathsisfun.com/index.htm  has everything we look at it in maths
Mathletics http://www.mathletics.co.nz/
http://stjosephsyear7.blogspot.co.nz/p/maths.html videos to watch and some games to play too
